NOTES

  • Tithe Maps are very accurate records of land, buildings, and routes in each parish, compiled in the early 1840s.
  • Apportionment - these documents complement the tithe maps and give land ownership and occupier of each plot.
  • Lay Subsidy Rolls are records of early taxation.
  • Oaths of Allegiance were sworn to the King.

OS 25 inch Maps

The National Library of Scotland have digitised and geo-referenced a great number of old maps. Obviously much of their work covers Scotland but they have many old Ordnance Survey maps covering England on their website, including the 25 inch England & Wales 1841 - 1952 Series, which are particularly useful for research purposes.

A notable feature is that old and new maps can be displayed side by side or a slider can be moved to change the level of transparency to display modern mapping beneath the old.

The archive currently comprises over 160 individually researched articles covering a diverse range of subjects; including short biographies of interesting people who have lived here, glossaries of local place names, analyses of populations from censuses, early schooling in East Budleigh, the history of the Pebblebed Heaths, descriptions of the carved bench ends of All Saints’ Church in East Budleigh, Gilpin’s Grade I listed Bicton parkland, ship building in the Otter estuary in Tudor and Stuart times, smuggling, coastguards and even how to make a traditional withy crab pot.
